Near to You

“For this commandment which I command you today is not too mysterious for you, nor is it far off. It is not in heaven, that you should say, ‘Who will ascend into heaven for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?’ Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will go over the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?’ But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may do it.” Deuteronomy 30:11-14

Moses had just finished speaking to the Israelites about the commandments of the Lord – the 10 commandments as well as the guidelines about how to put these commandments in place in their lives.
What I love about this is that Moses takes the time to point out that the Word of the Lord is never far away that we must call someone to go and retrieve it for us, but rather the Word of the Lord is always near.
He was refereeing to the word that He had given them, that they had heard, and that they would speak, in order that it would be done.
When I read this verse, I think about Jesus, who is the WORD.
It is such a comforting thought, that He too, is not far away, that we must send someone to retrieve His presence for us, but He is very near to us, in our mouth and in our hearts; as close as the very air we breathe, as close as the mention of His name.
What an amazing God we serve!

The Word of God

And you shall remember that the LORD your God led you all the way these forty years in the wilderness, to humble you and test you, to know what was in your heart, whether you would keep His commandments or not. “So He humbled you, allowed you to hunger, and fed you with manna which you did not know nor did your fathers know, that He might make you know that man shall not live by bread alone; but man lives by every word that proceeds from the mouth of the LORD. “Your garments did not wear out on you, nor did your foot swell these forty years. Deuteronomy 8: 2-4

Two things to hang onto this morning:
1) even when the Lord tests you, He will provide for your needs,
2) we require more than physical provision.
God tested the Israelites to see if they would keep His commandments, but in the midst of the testing He provided Manna from heaven to feed them and ensured that their garments did not wear out or their feet swell.
That is provision!
Moses also points out, that although God provided Manna in the desert to fill their bellies, that was not enough for life.
Man requires the Word of God to truly live.
What provision is the Lord providing for you today in the midst of the testing?
In the midst, are you seeking the Word of the Lord as well?

“For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart.” Hebrews 4:12
