A Memorial

Then Joshua called the twelve men whom he had appointed from the children of Israel, one man from every tribe; and Joshua said to them: “Cross over before the ark of the LORD your God into the midst of the Jordan, and each one of you take up a stone on his shoulder, according to the number of the tribes of the children of Israel, “that this may be a sign among you when your children ask in time to come, saying, ‘What do these stones mean to you?’ “Then you shall answer them that the waters of the Jordan were cut off before the ark of the covenant of the LORD; when it crossed over the Jordan, the waters of the Jordan were cut off. And these stones shall be for a memorial to the children of Israel forever.” Joshua 4:5-7

The men of the tribes of Israel were called to set up stones in the middle of the Jordan as a memorial – to remind them of what God had done in their lives and also to initiate a question from others about what the stones represented.
Often in our lives we need to be setting up stones as memorials.
God has been and continues to be so faithful, but sometimes we forget and need that visual reminder of where we have been and where He has brought us from and to.
As well those memorials are a great starting point to share the Love of God in our lives with those around us as they ask us,
“What do those stones mean to you?”
What does your memorial look like today?

Near to You

“For this commandment which I command you today is not too mysterious for you, nor is it far off. It is not in heaven, that you should say, ‘Who will ascend into heaven for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?’ Nor is it beyond the sea, that you should say, ‘Who will go over the sea for us and bring it to us, that we may hear it and do it?’ But the word is very near you, in your mouth and in your heart, that you may do it.” Deuteronomy 30:11-14

Moses had just finished speaking to the Israelites about the commandments of the Lord – the 10 commandments as well as the guidelines about how to put these commandments in place in their lives.
What I love about this is that Moses takes the time to point out that the Word of the Lord is never far away that we must call someone to go and retrieve it for us, but rather the Word of the Lord is always near.
He was refereeing to the word that He had given them, that they had heard, and that they would speak, in order that it would be done.
When I read this verse, I think about Jesus, who is the WORD.
It is such a comforting thought, that He too, is not far away, that we must send someone to retrieve His presence for us, but He is very near to us, in our mouth and in our hearts; as close as the very air we breathe, as close as the mention of His name.
What an amazing God we serve!
