Hedged In

You have hedged me behind and before,
And laid Your hand upon me.
Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;
It is high, I cannot attain it.
Psalm 139:5-6

Sometimes things feel a little out of control.
The days are not what we expect and the nights are dark.
In those moments we may wonder who is really in control of what is going on around us and within us.
We may feel like we are confined in a tight spot.
The Psalmist begins earlier in the Psalm by telling us that the Lord knows everything about us, our rising up and our sitting down; even our very thoughts.
In these verses the Psalmist also says, “You have hedged me behind and before and laid your hand upon me.”
What a comfort to know, that sometimes that confined feeling is not from being stuck in a place we can’t get out of, but rather that confined feeling comes from a place of being held safely in place in the midst of those things around us that feel out of control.
The Psalmist goes on to say,
“Such knowledge is too wonderful for me.”
How wonderful it is to know the “hedging hand” of the Lord on our lives.
The Hand that keeps us tucked in safely in the midst.
The Hand that keeps us tucked in securely when things around us seem out of control; the hand that does so, knowing everything about us, even our very thoughts.
Relax and rest in that hedging hand this morning!
