Double Portion

And so it was, when they had crossed over, that Elijah said to Elisha, “Ask! What may I do for you, before I am taken away from you?” Elisha said, “Please let a double portion of your spirit be upon me.” So he said, “You have asked a hard thing. Nevertheless, if you see me when I am taken from you, it shall be so for you; but if not, it shall not be so. Then it happened, as they continued on and talked, that suddenly a chariot of fire appeared with horses of fire, and separated the two of them; and Elijah went up by a whirlwind into heaven. And Elisha saw it, and he cried out, “My father, my father, the chariot of Israel and its horsemen!” So he saw him no more. And he took hold of his own clothes and tore them into two pieces.” 2 Kings 2: 9-12

Elisha walked with Elijah and saw the power of God moving through him in a mighty way.
When it was time for God to take Elijah up, Elijah asked Elisha what he could do for him.
Elisha didn’t hesitate.  He asked for a double portion of the spirit of God that was on Elijah.
Elijah didn’t seem surprised at this request nor did he rebuke Elisha for not being happy with what he currently had.
Elijah acknowledged that it was a “hard thing” but also told Elisha to tell how he would know if he had received the double portion.
There is nothing wrong with requesting the double portion from God.
Often we hear, “be satisfied with what you have”, “why do you always want more.”
But that is the world’s way of thinking.
When it comes to appropriating what God has for us, we have only accessed the tip of the iceberg.  There is so much more.
So when we ask for the double portion, God is pleased.
The thing to remember, though is with the double portion, comes increased responsibility.
Good stewardship of what we receive from the Lord is of utmost importance; as are pure intentions. Requesting the double portion must come from a place of right intentions to use that portion for the good of the people, not just for self-interests.
Are you in a place of yearning for more; more of God in your life and the lives around you?
Don’t hesitate.
Don’t be turned off by those around you that don’t yet understand requesting more.
Like Elisha, be prepared to answer quickly, when the Lord asks,
“What may I do for you?”
